Volunteer
MAS has volunteers with management, business, technical and profession expertise. Our volunteers use their skills and experience to help solve a wide range of problems encountered by Toronto nonprofit organizations. The assignments offered by MAS are challenging and rewarding. Not only do they benefit the community, but they also engage the volunteer in interesting and varied work. About half of our current volunteers are retired, while the other half are employed.

Volunteer form To be eligible to become a Volunteer Consultant (VC), you should have extensive and responsible recent experience in the MAS service area in which you wish to work. You will also have a basic interest in helping nonprofit organizations. Normally, a VC handles projects on his/her own and should have experience in working independently. While a VC works with clients on his/her own, there is always backup help available if required. It is expected that volunteers will remain with MAS for at least one year. Normally, volunteers can expect to receive around three projects each year.
Not all those who want to volunteer with MAS are accepted. There is an approval process, which includes a face-to-face interview. Work references may also be checked.
MAS deals with many culturally different agencies. Though not required, experience in dealing with other cultures would be an important asset for volunteers.
MAS is also looking for volunteers to help in our Toronto office. We need people to help with a wide variety of jobs, including marketing, fund-raising, IT work and project evaluation.
Once you are accepted as a VC, you will be considered for appropriate assignments in the areas where you have expertise. Being accepted as a volunteer does not mean you will automatically be given assignments. The number of assignments you receive will vary depending on your skills, the skills required for projects that come to MAS and the number of other VC’s in your area. If you are asked to take on a project, you may accept or decline the offer.
New volunteers are required to attend a half-day orientation session. You may be paired with other volunteers at first to ensure you have the requisite skills.
MAS volunteers not only receive work assignments, but there are quarterly Learning Days where various topics are addressed and issues are discussed. There is also a chance to network with other VC’s at these and other functions.
