Volunteer
MAS has volunteers with management, business, technical and professional expertise. Our volunteers use their skills and experience to help solve a wide range of problems encountered by nonprofit organizations in the Greater Toronto Area.
The assignments offered by MAS are challenging and rewarding. Not only do they benefit the community, but they also engage the volunteer in interesting and varied work.
About half of our current volunteers are retired, while the other half are employed.
Volunteers are able to accept or decline assignments that may be offered to them..
Current open volunteer positions
Volunteer form To be eligible to become a Volunteer Consultant (VC), you should:
- Have extensive and responsible recent experience in the MAS service area in which you wish to volunteer.
- Be in a stable work or retirement situation that enables you to predict your available time for volunteer work.
- Have a basic interest in helping nonprofit organizations.
- Have the necessary maturity and experience to work independently.
- Be willing to remain with MAS for at least one year.
- Be willing to accept around three projects each year.
Not all those who want to volunteer with MAS are accepted. There is an approval process, which includes an initial telephone interview and two face-to-face interviews. Work references may also be requested.
- MAS deals with people and agencies from many different cultures. Though not required,
experience in dealing with cultures other than your own is an important asset for volunteers.
What to expect:
- New volunteers are required to attend an orientation session and you may be paired with other volunteers for your first assignment(s).
- Once you are accepted as a VC, you will be offered appropriate assignments in the area[s] where you have expertise.
- While a VC works with clients on his/her own, there is always backup help available if required.
- Being accepted as a volunteer does not mean you will automatically take on assignments. The number of assignments you are offered will vary depending on your skills, the skills required for projects that come to MAS and the number of other VC’s in your area.
- Choice: If you are asked to take on a project, you may accept or decline the offer.
- MAS hosts quarterly Learning Days for volunteers where various topics are addressed and issues are discussed. There is also a chance to network with other VC’s at these and other functions.
MAS also needs volunteers to help in our Toronto office. These are people to help with a wide variety of tasks, including support for marketing, fund-raising, IT work and project evaluation.
